Some runway models could even be seen with multiple rings adorning one finger. Fashion is ever-changing, but some of the classic styles seem to never go out.

The Glorious Golden Globes

The Golden Globes are the type of award ceremony for which everybody goes all out to look their best. Naturally, some people absolutely shine, while others push the envelope a little bit too far and end up looking pretty bad.

While some people will inevitably wear diamonds to an award show of this caliber, some others will allow their outfits and their smiles to do the sparkling for them. Every year is a sort of silent competition to see who can look the most fabulous and who will end up setting new trends for the coming year. Needless to say, every year offers more than a few surprises, and this year’s Golden Globes were no different. Here’s a look at some of the best and worst dressed from the 2011 Golden Globes.

Among the worst was Megan Fox who donned a Giorgio Armani Prive, which unfortunately left a lot to be desired. The sheerness of her skirt coupled with its formless nature combined to look more like a ghost than a great outfit. That, coupled with the “wrappings” of a top that was reminiscent of a mummy, made her outfit less than impressive. Another fashion offender was Michelle Williams who wore a Valentino outfit that resembled a floral print table cloth in a sickly shade of mustard.

Washing those images out of the collective mind, Jennifer Lopez was dazzling in her Zuhair Murad dress, coupled with her Harry Winston jewelry. The jewelry alone cost $5 million, proving that sometimes looking your very best requires an investment. Helen Mirren also dressed to impress with a peach colored vintage inspired gown bedecked with crystals, coupled with a set of Cartier diamond earrings and a gorgeous diamond necklace.

Needless to say, the Golden Globes were a sight to see, both for some cruel entertainment at some people’s expense (no pun intended), and for a look at how incredible people can look when they put their minds to it.

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week: Oscar de la Renta and Marchesa

While designers last season were all about playing with vintage aesthetics, designers for fall are busy playing with new and exciting fabrics and textures. Beading. Appliques. Fur. It made for an exciting Mercedes-Benz fashion week, that’s for sure.

As usual, Oscar de la Renta didn’t do a flash-and-bang show highlighting the season’s hottest trends. Oscar de la Renta may play with aspects of certain trends (textures, metallics) in his designs, but de la Renta once again fixated on crafting timeless, well-made clothing for professional women. Both fur-cashgora and crochet made surprise appearances at his showing. Fur hoods managed to make his models look elegantly chilly instead of costumey or Eskimo-inspired. Ethnic-inspired prints surprised many audience members, as did his unusually silhouetted skirts. Evening gowns played a heavy role in the Fall de la Renta showing. De la Renta’s showstoppers included a dark blue V-neck gown with long sleeves and star-shaped embroidery along with an above-the-knee golden embroidered organza dress.

Marchesa took its fall fashion inspiration from the pages of literature and old film, basing its collection off of the 1946 David Lean movie based off of Charles Dickens’ “Great Expectations.” Specifically, the collection was based off of one of the main characters, Miss Havisham, a rich woman gone a little mad after becoming a jilted lover and as a result has left her opulent mansion go to ruin. Tulle ruled the runway as the Victorian ghost models drifted down the runway. Periwinkle, bright red, black, cream, and a dusty rose were the main colors utilized and Victorian-inspired silhouettes proved to be the collection’s framework. Others seemed taken out of the 40′s era that the David Lean movie was made in. While certainly not a collection for every day apparel, the collection was exciting and seemed a shoe-in for upcoming red carpet events.
